Distribution Data for Nomenia duodecemlineata
Large Map & Chart Report Errors About Maps
Distribution: Type locality (duodecemlineata): California; implied to be San Francisco region because type material was collected by Hy. Edwards (C. Schmidt, in litt., 2023).
Type locality (unipecta): ♂ Plumas Co., CA; the ♀ from Pasadena, CA.
Type locality (var. secunda): unknown.
Larva and
Host Plants:
(duodecemlineata) - Garry Oak (Pacific Forestry Centre vouchers barcoded)
(secunda) - uncertain; NM vouchers reared from grey oak, absent where CO voucher is from, and absent at secunda TL (C. Schmidt, in litt., 2023).
Description/
Field Marks:
Males with antennae "unipectinate, pectinations tipped with a fascicle of hairs, and on each side a row of cilia, apex simple..." - Pearsall(1905:126).
Genitalia: see Viidalepp (2011).
N. d. secunda is found in Colorado and possibly Utah and New Mexico. It may be represented at BOLD by BOLD:AAM8605.
Nomenia unipecta, a current synonym of duodecemlineata, may be a good species represented by BOLD:ACY6939 with a more easterly and southerly distribution.
Similar Species:
  • Venusia comptaria (Walker, 1860)
  • Venusia pearsalli (Dyar, 1906)
  • Undescribed sp. nr. duodecemlineata represented by BOLD:AAI5142 has a distribution limited to San Diego County.
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy: Larentia duodecemlineata Packard, 1873
Nomenia unipecta Pearsall, 1906
Nomenia secunda Pearsall, 1906
Taxonomic Notes: Nomenia obsoleta Swett, 1916 was formerly in the genus Venusia which previously included as a synonym Nomenia, a genus recognized as valid in Xue & Scoble (2002). DNA barcode appears to support Nomenia obsoleta Swett, 1916 as a synonym but examination of type specimens will be needed for confirmation. DNA barcode also appears to support the possibility of closely related cryptic species, some of which may refer to current synonyms of duodecemlineata.
