| Taxonomic: Notes |
Stigmella macrocarpae (Freeman, 1967), n. comb. (Nieukerken et al. 2016), was formerly treated as a junior synonym of latifasciella (Chambers, 1878). Nieukerken et al. (2016) listed macrocarpae as the valid name with latifasciella (Chambers, 1878), a junior homonym of Nepticula latifasciella Herrich-Schäffer, 1855, as a synonym. Erik van Nieukerken (in litt. via BugGuide.net, 2026) indicated that the holotype of latifasciella is likely conspecific with S. nigriverticella. Apparently, the host plant of macrocarpae is Bur oak and that of latifasciella is American chestnut. |

| Description: |
"In macrocarpae the white fascia is wider than the dark fascia's in the female, in the male wider than the basal, at least as wide as the terminal one. The male has no androconial scales. In nigriverticella the white fascia is narrower than the dark fascia's, or in the female at most as wide as the basal dark fascia. The male has extensive dark androconial scales on the hindwing."
