Gracillariidae
33a0120 – 0694   [Ornixolinae - No Genus] quinquistrigella (Chambers, 1875)

DNA - TX - © Mark Dreiling
Larva and
Host Plants:
Possibly Sida rhombifolia (Malvaceae) (Kimball 1965) if correctly identiifed; possibly Sphaeralcea angustifolia (Malvaceae) and/or Tragia betonicifolia (Euphorbiaceae) Eiseman (2025). See See Eiseman (2025) (BugTracks Blog).
Description/
Field Marks:
The true identity of quinquistrigella (Chambers, 1875) needs to be verified to distinguish it from albomarginatum (Walsingham, 1897). A specimen from TX was reared from Sphaeralcea angustifolia by Charley Eiseman. The adult is fairly indistinguishable from specimens from OK and TX reared from Tragia spp. by Mike Palmer and Kimberlie Sasan, suggesting two good species. A similar DNA barcoded specimen from FL seems to match the holotype and original description of albomarginatum slightly better. DNA barcoded specimens from OK and TX seem well supported as representing a single species separate from the species represented by the FL specimen. Although both names have been applied to specimens from OK, TX and FL, and there may well be two or even three good species, all are treated here as quinquistrigella along with those from FL pending further study.
Similar Species:
  • "Acrocercops" albomarginatum (Walsingham, 1897)
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy:
  • quinquistrigella (Chambers, 1875) (Gracilaria [sic]) n. comb. - MONA 1983: 0694; TL: Texas.
  • quinquestrigella (Mann, 1876) (Stilbosis) emend.
Note: The name quinquistrigella was apparently a misspelling of quinquestrigella, a name which seems to have first appeared in Mann (1876) followed by Chambers (1877) and subsequent authors until Davis (in Hodges et. al 1983) who listed quinquestrigella as a misspelling.
  • Taxonomic Notes: [Ornixolinae – No Genus] quinquistrigella (Chambers, 1875), n. comb., was formerly in the genus Acrocercops (Eiseman & Davis in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023).
