Synonymy: |
argentana Clerck 1759 (Phalaena); Type locality: Sweden |
Taxonomic Notes: |
Eana argentana (Clerck, 1759) is treated as two or more cryptic species with 'nominate' E. argentana as being extralimital (Palearctic) in Gilligan et al. (2020). It is listed as "E. argentana of authors; (not Clerck, 1759)" by Gilligan & Brown (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023). BOLD:AAA8425, the BIN group at BOLD containing 'nominate' argentana from Europe, includes a separate cluster representing populations from Kyrgyzstan and Alaska to the Pacific Northwest which might best be treated as a subspecies of argentana. The name E. argentana is retained at MPG pending further study on the recommendation of Michael Sabourin (pers. comm., 2022). The name plumbeana Durrant (1906) (TL: Siberia with specimens from “Kashmir-Deosai Plains” and “Sikim”) may apply to the NA population. |
