Distribution: Widely distributed in boreo-montane habitat across Canada south to WV, NM, UT, northern CA. FL stray suggested by Heppner is unlikely.
Type locality: "St. Martin’s Falls, Albany River, Hudson’s Bay" [Martin’s Falls, ON].

Taxonomic Notes: Acronicta grisea (Walker, 1856) includes as a synonym Acronicta tartarea [9213] in Pohl et al. (2010), ZooKeys, 38: 505.
