Description/
Field Marks:
Forewing shape is useful but not diagnostic. BOLD:AAA4924, the BIN for apicalis, has bent winged examples.
Similar Species:
  • Clostera apicalis (Walker, 1855) is nearly identical, though the forewing coastal margin tends to be less bent. Best separated by DNA or genitalia.
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy:
  • ornata (Grote & Robinson, 1868) (Ichthyura)
  • bifira (Edwards, 1886) (Ichthyura)
  • incarcerata Boisduval, 1869 (Clostera)
  • Taxonomic Notes: Clostera ornata (Grote & Robinson, 1868), formerly treated as a subspecies of 7901 Clostera apicalis (Walker, 1855), is raised to full species status, MONA Fascicle 22.1A: 70.
