Distribution: USA: southern CA. Type locality: San Diego, CA. Similar Species: Acronicta perdita (Grote, 1874) lacks the smudgy appearance of othello and ranges further north with little to no overlap. A dark sharply defined specimen, possibly a melanic form of othello, collected by Gary McDonald from San Benito Co., CA (see below), is narrowly separated from othello by DNA barcode and may represent an introgressive hybridization with perdita.
