Distribution: Western North America. Warm, dry Ponderosa pine forests. Seasonality and Size: Wingspan: male ~ 44-55; female ~ >60. Larva and Host Plants: Ponderosa pine. (see references) -- Host familiy: Pinaceae.  Host genera: Pinus.  Host extended: specialist primarily on Pinus ponderosa (Crabo et al 2014).  (Kimberley & Douglas 2025) Description/ Field Marks: Large size. Dark gray-black, or gray-brown (Mexico only) forewing Contrasting white hindwing Similar Species: 931399 Panthea virginarius Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.) Synonymy: gigantea (French, 1890) (Platycerura) - MONA 1983: 9181; Holotype: Estes Park, Larimer Co., CO.
