Distribution: Eastern US and Canada - Miller et al. (2021) Larva and Host Plants: Probably oak. (see references) -- Host familiy: Betulaceae Fagaceae Juglandaceae Sapindaceae[Aceraceae].  Host genera: Acer Betula Carpinus Juglans Quercus.  Notes: leaves, lists only Quercus (Wagner 2005).  (Shropshire & Tallamy 2025 [accessed 6xii2025]) Similar Species: 930082 Heterocampa umbrata: is found in FL and southeastern GA. Forewing lines tend to be broken and poorly defined. Best separated by genitalia. - Miller et al. (2021). Pinned specimens of related species. Synonymy: pulverea Grote & Robinson, 1867 (Heterocampa) - MONA 1983: [NEW]; TL: New York, Pennsylvania. nigra Chermock, 1927 (Heterocampa); TL: [Pittsburgh, PA]. Taxonomic Notes: Heterocampa pulverea Grote & Robinson, 1867, rev. stat. in Miller et al. (2021), was formerly treated as a subspecies of 7990 Heterocampa umbrata Walker, 1855 in Hodges et al. (1983) (Checklist).
