Description/ Field Marks: Forewing length male 9-14 mm: female 12-16 mm. Similar Species: Acrolophus macrophallus forewing length male 9-10 mm: female 10-12 mm. Peter Jump reports that you can't separate variabilis from macrophallus without looking at the genitalia (although in some cases the forewing length can distinguish the species). Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.) Synonymy: variabilis (Walsingham, 1887) (Ortholophus) - MONA 1983: 0385   Type locality: Arizona.
