Genitalia:
  • maccana ♂: "tegumen somewhat rectangular, socii rather uniform in width with posterior and anterior ends approximate in size" - Micahel Sabourin, 1/20/2021
  • fishiana ♂: "tegumen margins oblique, socii expanded medially and anterior end narrower than posterior end" - Micahel Sabourin, 1/20/2021
  • maccana ♀: "... the chitinized initial protion of the ductus bursae [see Pierce & Metcalfe (1922), pl. 8] does not extend below the cephlic margin of the genital plate: it is followed by a short weakly chitinized funnel-shaped portion, beyond which it is membranous." - McDunnough (1940:59-61)
  • fishiana ♀: "... the initial chitinous portion of the ductus [see McDunnough, 1934:329, fig. 2] projects shortly beyond the plate and is not followed by any distinctly chitinized funnel-shaped portion, this section, while somewhat expanded, being largely membranous with only indications of irregular chitinization." - McDunnough (1940:59-61)

  • Taxonomic Notes: Acleris maccana (Treitschke, 1835) includes as a synonym A. fishiana (Fernald, 1882) in McDunnough (1934:292). McDunnough (1940) subsequently returned fishiana to full species status. Obraztsov (1963) subsequently returned fishiana to synonymy of maccana.

Given the differences in DNA barcode and reexamination of genitalia by Michael Sabourin, fishiana may prove to be a good species or subspecies with both taxa occurring in the North America. If, as Obraztsov suggests, specimens from Europe have genitalia like that of fishiana, the name might refer to one of the current European synonyms of maccana.
