Larva and
Host Plants:
Physocarpus (Spiraea) opulifolius
Similar Species:
  • The following members of the spiraeifoliana species complex (Gilligan et al. 2008) cannot at present be reliably distinguished by external features of adults. (A. mira is here included based on DNA barcode):
    • 3365 A. spiraeifoliana
    • 3366 A. laciniana
    • 3367 A. burgessiana
    • 3368 A. mira
    • 3369 A. fuscociliana
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy: Anchylopera spiraeifoliana Clemens, 1860
Phoxopteryx spiraeifoliana Zeller, 1875
Anchylopera spireaefoliana Clemens, 1860
Taxonomic Notes: Ancylis spiraeifoliana (Clemens, 1860): Gilligan & Brown (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023) attributed the emendation of spireaefoliana to Walsingham (1879) following Hodges et al. (1983) (Checklist). Per McDunnough (1955), it was in fact Zeller (1875) who proposed the name spiraeifoliana as a replacement for spireaefoliana Clemens 1860, an original misspelling intended to be based on the host plant Spiraea opulifolius.
