Distribution: CT to MB south to VA, KY and KS - Gilligan et al. (2008).
Type locality: USA, Missouri.
Larva and
Host Plants:
Cirsium horridulum (yellow thistle), Rosa eglanteria (sweetbriar rose) - Gilligan et al. (2008).
Similar Species:
  • 2748 Aterpia approximana has ochreous palpi, head and thorax, not mostly gray like H. cyanana. Genitalic dissection is required for confirmation.
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy: Penthina cyanana Murtfeldt, 1880
