Distribution: "Central California, from the Sierra Nevada west to coastal areas" - Heppner (2022).
Holotype: Missouri Flat, Placerville, El Dorado Co., CA.
Similar Species:

Taxonomic Notes: Neocaloreas melanifera (Fernald, 1900), n. comb. in Heppner (2022), Lepidoptera Novae, 15(1-2): 65, formerly in the genus Caloreas, was listed as a synonym of 2640 Caloreas multimarginata (Braun, 1925) in Hodges et al. (1983) (Checklist). Powell & Opler (1996:122) and Heppner (2022) treat melanifera as a full species. "As noted for N. multimarginata, there may be a hybrid zone between the two species in the northwestern region of California." - Heppner (2022)
