Primarily "... the flowers of Sonchus L., Hieracium L. and Lactuca L. (Asteraceae) (Ronkay and Ronkay 1994) in Europe" - Handfield & Handfield (2010).
Similar Species:
  • Cucullia intermedia lacks the mid longitudinal reddish streak of umbratica and has hind wings of males fuscous brown vs. the mainly dirty white of male umbratica
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy: Phalaena umbratica Linnaeus, 1758
Cucullia sonchi Heinemann, 1859
Taxonomic Notes: Cucullia umbratica (Linnaeus, 1758) is now recognized within the North American fauna from the Magdalen Islands, Quebec in Handfield & Handfield (2010), ZooKeys, 39: 183-186.
