Digital Guide to Moth Identification

Tortricidae
620627.00 – 2833   Phiaris siderana (Treitschke, 1835)

- gen. - © Glenn Fine
Distribution: Type locality (siderana): Banat, Romania.
Type locality (aurana): Kuatun, China.
Type locality (chalybeana): "Siskiyou Mountains, on the borders of Oregon and California".
Type locality (notata): Hokkaido, Japan.
Similar Species:
  • Olethreutes albiciliana (Fernald, 1882), possibly congeneric, is an eastern species.
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy: Sericoris siderana Treitschke, 1834
Argyroploce aurana Caradja, 1939
Sericoris chalybeana Walsingham, 1879
Argyroploce notata Walsingham, 1900
Taxonomic Notes: Phiaris siderana, formerly in the genus Olethreutes with current placement following Gilligan et al. (2020), is treated as a member of Celypha by some authors. This Eurasian species includes as a synonym Sericoris chalybeana Walsingham, 1879 described from California, previously treated as a subspecies in Hodges et al. (1983) (Checklist). At BOLD there are no DNA barcoded specimens from North America identified as siderana or chalybeana. "There is no evidence that siderana is holarctic so chalybeana should at least be retained/considered as a subspecies", Michael Sabourin (pers. comm., 11/8/2022).
