Taxonomic Notes: |
Epinotia indecorana (Zetterstedt, 1839), considered a subspecies of Epinotia trigonella (Linnaeus, 1758) by some workers, was treated as a full species by Karsholt et al. (2015), then subsequently as a synonym of trigonella by Gilligan et al. (2020) and Gilligan & Brown (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023) based on a lack of DNA support. However, the DNA evidence is inconclusive and differences in female genitalia do appear to separate the two species (M. Sabourin in lit., 2024), and they appear ecologically different (M. Mutanen in lit., 2024). Future DNA and genitalia work, especially with Greenland specimens, would seem warranted. In designating a lectotype for indecorana, Wolff (1964) included as a synonym petalonota (Meyrick, 1937). |
