Distribution: Widespread in the US and southern Canada.
Similar Species:
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy:
  • cespitana Hübner [1817] (Tortrix); Type locality: Europe
  • instrutana Clemens 1865 (Sericoris); Type locality: USA: VA
  • poana Zeller 1876 (Sericoris); Type locality: USA: OH, MA
  • Taxonomic Notes: Celypha cespitana (Hübner, [1817]) was treated as extralimital (Palearctic) based on DNA evidence in Gilligan et al. (2020). Gilligan & Brown (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023) proposed the placeholder name "Celypha cespitana of authors; (not Hübner, [1817])" for the valid biologic NA species previously ascribed to cespitana with all synonyms of cespitana described from NA as placeholder synonyms. However, Celypha instrutana (Clemens, 1865) is the senior available name for Nearctic specimens and it's usage is putative. With valid NA synonyms available, we find it appropriate to retain the name Celypha cespitana (Hübner, [1817]) pending further study to confirm the status of C. cespitana and its North American synonyms.
