Synonymy:
  • deutschiana of authors; (not Zetterstedt, 1839)
  • Taxonomic Notes: Aethes deutschiana of authors; (not Zetterstedt, 1839) refers to one or more cryptic species from the US and southern Canada previously treated as A. deutschiana. Although deutschiana was listed as extralimital (Palearctic) in Gilligan et al. (2020), Gilligan & Brown (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023) retained deutschiana based on specimens from northern Canada with DNA barcodes matching those from Europe.

The names A. chalcana (Packard, 1866), TL: Labrador, and A. fuscostrigana (Clemens, 1864), TL: Labrador, both currently treated as synonyms of A. deutschiana), await revision and potentially refer to one or two of the cryptic species associated with A. deutschiana of authors. As of 9/5/2020, no specimens in this group from east of Manitoba have been DNA barcoded.
