Taxonomic Notes: Catocala faustina Strecker, 1873 includes as subspecies Catocala cleopatra Strecker, 1874, Fieldiana: Zoology, New Series, 59 (1414): 8, and Catocala allusa Hulst, 1884, ZooKeys 39: 44. Some authors informally treat allusa as a full species. There is active study aimed at resolving the status of the names listed as faustina subspecies, Lawrence Gall (pers. comm., 12/5/2018).
