Distribution: West of the Continental Divide. In some places just East of the Divide (Colorado, Alberta) overlap with 7855 - Hemaris diffinis is known and specific identity becomes problematical when based on photographs. Similar Species: Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.) Synonymy: thetis (Boisduval, 1855) (Macroglossa) brucei French, 1890 (Hemaris) cynoglossum Edwards, 1875 (Hemaris) heppneri Eitschberger, Danner & Surholt, 1996 (Hemaris) jordani Barnes & Benjamin, 1927 (Hemaris) mcdunnoughi Clark, 1927 (Hemaris) minima Frankenbusch, 1925 (Hemaris) palpalis Grote, 1874 (Hemaris) rubens Edwards, 1875 (Hemaris) senta (Strecker, 1878) (Macroglossa) Taxonomic Notes: Hemaris thetis (Boisduval, 1855) includes as a synonym 7856 Hemaris senta in Schmidt (2009), Jour.
