Holotype: Nassau, Bahamas.
Genitalia: See Eitschberger (2016).
Similar Species:
  • Sphinx strigilis Linnaeus, 1771 is separated only by genitalia. Identification based on phenotypes may not be reliable.
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Taxonomic Notes: Protambulyx carteri Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, formerly treated as a synonym of Protambulyx strigilis (Linnaeus, 1771) in Tuttle (2007), was implicitly reinstated as a species by Heppner, 2008, Lepid. Novae 1: 90 and subsequently treated as a full species in Eitschberger (2015) and Kitching et al. (2018).
