  • Taxonomic Notes: Pterocypha defensata Walker, 1862: Being uncertain of the true identity of defensata Walker, Ferguson (in Hodges et al. (1983)) listed “defensata Wik., 1862, indent. uncert.” as a synonym of P. floridata (Walker, [1863]), as opposed to listing defensata as a misidentification of floridata or including floridata as a junior synonym of the older name, defensata. Subsequent authors would erroneously include defensata as a synonym of floridata. To clear up the error of priority, Becker & Miller (2002) proposed defensata Walker, 1862, "revised status”, as the valid name. However, DNA barcode does not appear to support this synonymy, and it is unclear if floridata and defensata were actually ever formally synonymized.
