Crambidae
80a1478 – 5445   Thaumatopsis repandus (Grote, 1880)

© David Trochlell
Distribution: Type locality: Colorado.
Description/
Field Marks:
"Antennae with a single outer row of short teeth, obsolete at base, continued to tips. The stem is outwardly pure white. The teeth increase very slightly in size towards the middle and taper very gradually; they are ciliated. Whitish. Fine dark brown lines run along the interspaces." (Grote 1880)
Similar Species:
  • Thaumatopsis crenulatella Kearfott, 1908 male has serrate antennae heavily ciliated and without pectination. The teeth are sub-quadrate and are up to 1-1/2 times thickness of the stalk. Repandus male also has serrate antennae but each segment has a long pectination projecting from each tooth. The teeth are short and triangular, and project less than the thickness of the stalk. (Descriptions are based on Kearfott (1908). His illustration of the antennae of repandus does not seem to agree with the original description.)
  • There is apparently an undescribed species with antennae intermediate represented by BIN: BOLD:AAZ7137. Kearfott (1908) noted a specimen with this character and speculated that it might be an intermediate form. However, Kearfott’s illustration of repandus does not match the original description. It is possible that BOLD:AAZ7137 represents true repandus and BOLD:AAE7727, with specimens having antennae with long pectination, represents an undescribed species.

Synonymy: Crambus Propexus repandus Grote, 1880
