Taxonomic Notes: Aethes deutschiana of authors; (not Zetterstedt, [1839]) refers to one or more cryptic species from the US and southern Canada previously treated as A. deutschiana. “True” deutschiana is listed as extralimital (Palearctic) in Gilligan et al. (2020), Insects, 11(9), 594: 1-59, however, specimens from northern Canada have DNA barcodes matching those of deutschiana from Europe so we continue to treat that species as Holarctic.

A. chalcana (Packard, 1866), TL: Labrador, and A. fuscostrigana (Clemens, 1864), TL: Labrador, both treated as synonyms of A. deutschiana in Pohl et al. (2018), await revision and potentially refer to one or two of the cryptic species associated with A. deutschiana of authors. As of 9/5/2020, no specimens in this group from east of Manitoba have been DNA barcoded.
