Distribution: Introduced from Europe. Canada: QC, NS. (iNaturalist) Larva and Host Plants: Primarily "... the flowers of Sonchus L., Hieracium L. and Lactuca L. (Asteraceae) (Ronkay and Ronkay 1994) in Europe" - Handfield & Handfield (2010). Similar Species: Cucullia intermedia lacks the mid longitudinal reddish streak of umbratica and has hind wings of males fuscous brown vs. the mainly dirty white of male umbratica Pinned specimens of related species. Synonymy: umbratica Linnaeus 1758 (Phalaena) sonchi Heinemann 1859 (Cucullia) Taxonomic Notes: Cucullia umbratica (Linnaeus, 1758) is now recognized within the North American fauna from the Magdalen Islands, Quebec in Handfield & Handfield (2010), ZooKeys, 39: 183-186.
