Sharpening or Refocusing Photographs

Virtually all living moth photographs, and many of those of spread specimens, that come in to MPG have the focus sharpened using Focus Magic software. The application costs about $50 and I consider it to be the most valuable software that I own.

All photographs made with automatic focus digital cameras produce "soft focus" pictures. Photos produced with more expensive SLR digital cameras, using good macro lenses, usually arrive at MPG in better focus, but even they can often stand a minor degree of sharpening.

Shown below are several paired rows of "before" and "after" photographs. These are mainly photographs placed on MPG pages a few years ago before I acquired and began routinely using Focus Magic. The sharpened versions of these photos will replace those that are presently on our pages.
