Digital Guide to Moth Identification

Unidentified Platynota

Thanks to John Brown and Michael Sabourin for advice on identifications.

Based on the length of the male forewing costal fold (ca. 2/3 the length of the forewing), the first five are P. rostrana or P. flavedana. The two species can be distinguished easily from each other by the scaling on the head – with a complex “hood” in rostrana (probably these), simple in flavedana – difficult to see well in photographss. Among the next four specimens, two (180200, 363120) are males. The short costal fold (ca. 1/3 the length of the forewing) strongly suggests P. idaeusalis. The females are probably P. idaeusalis as well. ~ contributed by John Brown
