Noctuidae
931339.85n – 9087.51   Ponometia cf. bruchi (, )

- TX - © Monica Krancevic
Distribution: LA and possibly AZ (BOLD) and TX (iNat).
Type locality (Ponometia bruchi): La Paz, Córdoba Province, Argentina.
Type locality (albisecta): Tapia, Brazil.
Similar Species:
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Taxonomic Notes: Ponometia cf. bruchi (Breyer, 1931) refers to the unidentified specimen collected from St. Tammany Parish, LA by Vernon Brou, shown as "Ponometia new species 2" on the Nearctica.com website. It is believed to be Ponometia bruchi (Breyer 1931) or a closely related species. An individual similar to the St. Tammany Parish specimen was photographed in Texas (see above left of map).

A male specimen collected by Lars Crabo from AZ (CNCLEP00119952), image below, shares the same DNA barcode with other specimens in BOLD:AAB3329, the BIN group for "bruchi". The identification of the AZ specimen was based on similarity to males in that BIN. All specimens in that BIN are from Costa Rica except for the AZ specimen and one individual from Mexico. It is unclear how the other identifications were made. The type locality of bruchi is Argentina; the sex of the holotype is unstated. The specimens in BOLD:AAB3329 are apparently sexually dimorphic. Females do seem to match the holotype of bruchi.

While females in BOLD:AAB3329 do match the holotype of bruchi, males including the AZ specimen do not. However, they do match the original description and illustration of Tarachidia albisecta Hampson, 1910, a name with which bruchi was synonymized by Todd (1966) and placed in the genus Tarachidia. The type locality of albisecta is also Argentina. The sex of the holotype is stated as a female (an error?). It is unclear if a later author reversed this synonymy. Possibly due to an oversight, the synonymy was not mentioned in Lafontaine & Poole (2010) where both names were treated as full species and transferred to the genus Ponometia. Range aside, the identifications in BOLD:AAB3329 may be correct. Or it is possible that they refer to albisecta. If the synonymy proves to have been overlooked, then albisecta would have priority.
