Sphingidae
890143.00 – 7823   Smerinthus saliceti Boisduval, [1875]
Distribution Data for Smerinthus saliceti
Large Map & Chart Report Errors About Maps
Distribution: Possibly AZ, NM. (Kitching 2019), accessed 9/24/21, apparently treats saliceti as extralimital north of central Mexico.)
Type locality: Mexico.
Similar Species:
  • Smerinthus astarte - see taxonomic notes.
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy: Smerinthus saliceti Boisduval, [1875]
Taxonomic Notes: Smerinthus saliceti Boisduval, 1875 may only occur in central Mexico with records from CA likely referring to 7822.1 S. ophthalmica and those from AZ and NM to 7822.2 S. astarte. The true identity of saliceti is apparently unknown and it is possible that it is conspecific with S. astarte in which case saliceti would have priority. Records from AZ and NM are treated here as astarte but both names are retained pending further study. See Kitching (2019).
