Large Map & Chart Report Errors About Maps
Distribution: Alaska to Newfoundland.
Type locality: Canada. "Labrador, Hopedale".
Similar Species:
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Taxonomic Notes: Eana niveosana (Packard, 1866) was listed as a subspecies of E. osseana (Scopoli, 1763) in Brown (2005:266). Pohl et al. (2018:122) stated that niveosana "applies to all North American populations, and may warrant full status”. Gilligan et al. (2020:12) note that DNA barcode data supports returning niveosana to full species status as one of three cryptic species (two Nearctic and one Holarctic) near osseana which they treat as extralimital to North America (Palearctic). Michael Sabourin (pers. comm., 2022) recommends that the treatment in Hodges et al. (1983) (Checklist), which lists niveosana as a full species, be followed and notes that more work is needed.
