Distribution: Holotype: Goldstream, BC.
Description/
Field Marks:
See Swett (1916). Antennae are apparently unipectinate. Caution: This species has apparently been confused with a V. pearsalli. It is far more likely to be confused with Venusia cambrica or N. duodecemlineata. Compare with illustration of type specimen in Rep. Prov. Mus. Nat. Hist. 1916.
Similar Species:
  • Nomenia duodecemlineata (Packard, 1873)
  • Venusia cambrica Curtis, 1839 is bipectinate.
  • Venusia pearsalli (Dyar, 1906) is likely represented at BOLD by BIN BOLD:AAB5482 with most specimens mis-identified as "Venusia obsoleta". Though some can be similar, they do not in general match the original description of obsoleta and DNA barcode places them squarely in the genus Venusia. There are several BINs narrowly separated by DNA barcode, and which represents true pearsalli is uncertain
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy: Nomenia obsoleta Swett, 1916
Taxonomic Notes: Nomenia obsoleta Swett, 1916 was formerly in the genus Venusia which previously included as a synonym Nomenia, a genus recognized as valid in Xue & Scoble (2002). Nomenia duodecemlineata (Packard, 1873) may be a senior synonym based on DNA barcode. Images if both are placed on the species page of duodecemlineata.
