Moths of Mexico, Central and South America

This section of the website is a holding area for photographs of lepidoptera from south of our checklist area.

There are many problems associated with identification or lepidoptera from Central and South America. Compared to the situation in North America north of Mexico the species are less well known, collections are relatively small and not extensively curated, and comprehensive checklists are wanting. For these reasons the great majority of moths appearing on these pages will be unidentified or, at best, be named provisionally.

It is to be hoped that our inclusion here of "South of the Border Moths" will be temporary, and that institutions elsewhere within our hemisphere will begin to offer significant venues for them.

All proposed identifications should be treated as preliminary and tentative.
