Digital Guide to Moth Identification

Archived Photos of Living Moths

Please see the page on submitting photos (link above at right). Photos that are identified here are retained for later use on pages like this one and on individual species pages. For photos to be usable here they must be capable of cropping and reduction to fit a square 225 x 225 pixels in size. A different size (300 x 225) will be used for some species that normally pose with the wings fully spread.

Photos are preferred of moths oriented head upward rather than at an angle. Normally, four photos, each by a different photographer, will be the limit per species. Exceptions might be made for species where there are many morphs, forms and aberrations. Better photos will replace those not as capable of helping to identify the species. There is no guarantee that a photo, once in the archive, will be retained permanently.

That's right! Within and beneath that floral bouqet is the larva, which has clipped and attached foliage to itself to serve as camouflage. There are a number of species that do this, and the identity of this colorfully dressed larva is not known with certainty.

Here are three more photos, possibly all of different species, which show various kinds of camouflage. The moth in the photo at left looks like the incipient stage of the one above.

Carroll Rudy reared the larva at right, below, to produce the adult shown at left. The camouflage is shed with the skin at instar changes. This one has not yet completed its new covering.

While photographing moths in the weedy edge of an orange grove beside the Hickory Point Recreatiion Area at Little Lake Harris, Lake County, Florida, my wife asked "what's that crawling on that plant?" I have a terrible time finding caterpillars until someone points them out to me. I knew immediately that this was an Emerald caterpillar but not which species. I placed the caterpillar and a couple of leaves in a small pill vial and I gave it to Machelle White when we visited her that evening. Machelle reared the caterpillar on Common Beggar-ticks, Bidens alba (the plant on which we found it) and her photos show the leafy pupal cocoon and the recently eclosed adult (above right). ~~ Bob Patterson
