8131 -- Salt Marsh Moth -- Estigmene acrea

The common name of this moth is a bit misleading. Covell reports the larva are serious pests on many plants including apple trees, cabbage, clover, corn, cotton, peas, potato, tobacco and other plants. The adult sexes are dimorphic; females do not have the dark orange-yellow hind wings found in males. I thank Darryl Searcy of Range, Alabama, for sending me the photo of a male.
