| 7059 -- Southern Emerald Moth -- Synchlora frondaria | ||
|
Larvae of this (and a few other Emerald) species are noted for their habit of attaching to themselves pieces of vegetation that help them hide from predators. Beth spotted this one along the weedy edge of an orange grove near the Hickory Point Recreation Area at Little Lake Harris, Lake County, Florida. We collected the caterpillar along with some of the wildflowers it was feeding on and gave them to Machele White who lives in Lake County. Machele reared the caterpillar and photographed the adult that emerged from its pupa a few weeks later, thus permitting us to know the species with certainty. | ||
