2294.99 -- Least Dichomeris Moth -- Dichomeris siren

The common name used here is of my invention. This is the smallest species of Dichomeris in North America. Hodges gives the wing length as 3.1-3.8 mm. Described by Hodges in 1986, the type locality is about 30 miles from my yard. Dates for specimens known to Hodges go back to 1911 in Connecticut, and it is known from Michigan and New Jersey as well as several locations near Washington, D.C. I had a dull specimen the next night. It did not glow in the MV light as did this one. It was a startling shiny little moth.
