2268 -- Lanceolate Helcystogramma Moth -- Helcystogramma [Brachmia] hystricella

Thanks go to John Glaser and to Dr. Ronald W. Hodges for confirming the identification of this species. I had noticed that, in his MONA fascicle, Hodges had reported specimens from the midwestern states, but no closer to Maryland than Ohio. In response to my enquiry he told me: "Distribution of many, if not most, gelechiids is patchy at best. So, it is not surprising to find specimens in new "out of known range" localities." It turned out that, when I discussed this specimen with John Glaser, he checked the gelechiid drawer in his collection to discover that he had taken a previously unidentified specimen of this species at the Severn Run Wildlife Management Area in Anne Arundel County, MD, about 15 miles from my location. So, I can't claim credit for a state record, darn it! Still, it is a nice find and a county record. Moreover, it demonstrates that an amateur or hobbyist can make contributions to our knowledge of biogeography.

The common name used here is of my invention.
