0418.99 -- Yellow-headed Monopis Moth -- Monopis sp. nr. monochella

I originally call this moth Monopis monachella based upon European photographs. In October of 2003 I photographed many of these (poorly, outdoors at night) and retained one specimen that has an immaculate white patch on one wing and a patch with a "stain" on the other wing. I assumed that my moth was the same as in the European photos (that species also occurs in North America).

In 2004, however, this species has been present from early May through at least October 16, and every specimen, of many dozens observed, had the colored marking, seen below, within the white wing patches. In addition, all fresh specimens of this species have an obvious yellow tinge to the white of the head and shoulders, and to a lesser extent to the wing patches. It is not consistent with the European form of M. monachella. Larry Line contacted Don Davis at the USNM and learned that this is believed to be an as yet unidentified introduced species.
