Digital Guide to Moth Identification

Charles Melton's Cochise County Moths

I live in Miller Canyon at an elevation of 5,000 ft. in the Huachuca Mountains, one of the "sky islands" of Cochise County in southeastern Arizona. There are many species of plants and animals that are found only in this area of North America north of Mexico or in a relatively small area bordering it..

My interest in insects and photography go back a long way and have developed in tandem. Some of my initial subjects with my very first camera were backyard insects. I’m still a generalist and enjoy learning about, and photographing, a wide variety of insect subjects. Until recently, I had stayed away from photographing moths, primarily due to the difficulty of obtaining identifications with such a large and diverse group. But with the development of websites such as BugGuide and Moth Photographers Group, identifications are much more readily obtained. I’m happy to contribute my images to these sites in appreciation of the benefits they provide. I have also begun to photograph the development of immature stages and plan on doing more of this in the future.

In addition to insects, almost all aspects of nature are suitable subjects for me. Hummingbirds are a favorite of mine for both photos and video. Images of these other subjects can be viewed at my website at www.nearfamous.com.

My images of wildlife, plants and scenic views have appeared in many magazines and books. Over the years I've built up a library of about 100,000 stock photographs. I also get a lot of enjoyment out of teaching small classes of enthusiasts some of the techniques in high speed photography that I have learned to use to capture images of hummigbirds and bats in flight.
